Second round over
Many of the participants in the qualifier attended the training event the previous weekend in the hope to spend some time in the boats and learn a bit more about match racing in order to gain an advantage over their opponents.
The second qualifier was sailed in ideal match racing conditions with clear skies and light to moderate winds, allowing the boats to be set up with full sailing rig.
Mason Woodworth and his crew of Simon Hamilton, David Brown and Phil Caistor failed to lose a match all weekend, dominating the event. Runner-up was Christian Hamilton who narrowly defeated Andrew Cornah in a best of five match semi-finals. Both Woodworth and Hamilton qualify their teams for a place in the final, which will take place at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy from the 20-22nd September 2002.
Mason and Christian took advantage of the match race training weekend prior to the qualifier and both skippers commented on what a valuable experience the training had been.
Andrew Cornah finished third overall by beating David Neimann in the petit-final.
RYA Racing Services Manger, David Atkinson, commented "the standard of sailing was indeed high and there were some very close tactical calls and many of those present benefited greatly from the training weekend which showed in the standard of racing."
There is still time to take part in the RYA National Match Racing Series, the next qualifying event, to win a place in the all important final, takes place over the weekend of the 7/8 September, with a chance to get some training in before the qualifier over the weekend of the 31 August.
The next event in the series is the RYA Youth Match Racing Championships at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy from the 17-19 August with training days prior to the event on the 14/15 August.
