A report on the opening blood in this weekend's Warsash Spring Series

Monday March 17th 2003, Author: Mike Dodd-Noble, Location: United Kingdom
Brilliant sunshine, clear skies and a fresh 20 knots of wind dropping to 15 knots, marked the start of the Raymarine Warsash Spring Series in the Central Solent on March 16th.

For Warsash Sailing Club it was the 21st Anniversary year of the series, which is the largest regatta in the South after Cowes Week and marks the start of the yacht racing season in the Solent. This year Portsmouth-based Raymarine has joined the event as title sponsor.

Trouble on shore delayed the start of the racing by 30 minutes as the Race Committee opted for a delay of 30 minutes to allow competitors to arrive after gridlock at the Tesco roundabout in Bursledon prevented crews reaching Hamble or Warsash.

With winds from east south east, the Blue Group committee set a course towards the eastern end of the Ryde Middle Bank. The courses resulted mostly in white sail fetches, followed by a four-mile spinnaker run before a final beat to the finish at Air Canada.

The high performance IRM yachts were clean away for the first race, with the usual battle between the Race 1 Kerr 11.3 and Farr 40s. El Gringo scored first blood for the Kers taking the first race but in the second Too Steamy pulled one back for the Farrs to take first place ahead of another Farr 40 Cadhireuk Farrfalina and El Gringo.

The IRC Division 1 class was the only class of the larger yachts to have a false start and here the farr 52 Admiral’s Cup contender Team Tonic with its new sponsor Volvo, set a cracking pace reaching the finishing line ahead of the committee boat. Fortunately a RIB had been sent on ahead to record the finishing time. Team Tonic logged line honours but first place on corrected time went to the Swan 65 Desperado. Third place went to Glyn and Ina Williams’ newly commissioned W.I.S.C (Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing).

IRC 2 saw the first public outing of the new Seaquest 36 prototype. Still sailing under its project code name, TBA3, it took first place ahead of Kier Building With Flair, skippered by Jim Macgregor from Poole.

Classic yachts dominated IRC Division 4 when the 44ft yawl, Frenesi of Clynder took line honours, only to see victory snatched away by 11 seconds on corrected time by Equator, a Contessa 32.

Having two committee boats for the White Group greatly speeded the running of the two races for each class. Once each class fleet was home the start committee was able to get them quickly away for the second leg.

As usual racing was tight, particularly in the Hunter 707 class. 24 boats came to the line but after two general recalls the Committee hoisted a black flag to warn that they would be disqualified if over the line. Charlie Fish scored victory by a minute in the first "windward-leeward" race, while in the second race "round the cans" she was only 21 seconds ahead of Black Sheep.

In the Sportsboat class, apparent confusion in reading the course information led to a third of the fleet taking the wrong course. Turbo Services International took the first race 1’29" ahead of Three Sad Old Blokes, on corrected time, but in the second the order was reversed.
