Swedish Match Tour dates announced
After a four month hiatus following last October’s Bermuda Gold Cup, the Swedish Match Tour resumes with the Steinlager Line 7 Cup, n o10-16 March. For 2003, the regatta will move from Auckland’s Viaduct Basin to Wellington.
Following the Congressional Cup in Long Beach, on 6-12 April, the Swedish Match Tour will begin its European leg, by welcoming the Toscana Elba Cup-Trofeo Locman in Portoferraio, Elba, Italy, on 10-16 May.
In its second year, the Toscana Elba Cup-Trofeo Locman has quickly established a reputation as one of the world’s top match racing events, offering prize money of more than 200,000 Euros and racing on the same waters chosen by the Italian challengers for America’s Cup 2003, Mascalzone Latino and Prada Challenge, as their training bases.
"We are very pleased to add an event such as the Toscana Elba Cup-Trofeo Locman to our schedule," said Pierre Tinnerholm, President of Swedish Match Grand Prix AB. "In its first year it positioned itself as an elite event and as such, deserves to be a part of the Swedish Match Tour."
The Swedish Match Tour then moves on to ACI HT Cronet Cup, 27 May-2 June, held in Split, Croatia, on the South Adriatic coast. As the cultural and economic center of Dalmatia, Split is well known for its sailing conditions and tradition.
The ninth event on Swedish Match Tour 2002/2003 is the Match Race Germany on 5-9 June, held off Langenargen on Lake Constance in southern Germany. With its beautiful scenery and the Swiss Alps in the background, this is a perfect setting from which to watch racing.
Swedish Match Tour 2002/2003 concludes the first week of July with the Swedish Match Tour finale, the Swedish Match Cup, in Marstrand, Sweden.
With the addition of the Toscana Elba Cup-Trofeo Locman, the Swedish Match Tour grows to 10 events for 2002/2003. As a result, the Swedish Match Tour Championship will be determined by a skipper’s best eight of 10 finishes.
Several America's Cup teams are expecting to take part in events on the Tour later this year. And there is substantial prize money at stake. In addition to more than US$400,000 in individual event prize money, the Swedish Match Tour awards US$200,000 to the top eight sailors on the Swedish Match Tour, with the first-place skipper netting US$60,000.
