As breeze kicks in for day two of the French Mumm 30 Nationals

Sunday June 8th 2003, Author: Anne Savatier, Location: France
Heavy rainfall overnight saw the clubhouse terrace here awash this morning, but in no way dampened the spirits of the Mumm 30 crews, as they pulled away from the pontoons at 08.30 this morning for the second day of this French National Open.

After yesterday’s 6 – 7 knots of wind off le Havre, today’s forecast was for a SW 3–4, becoming WSW Force 3 with a slight sea. In the event there was much more breeze...

An excellent day’s sailing followed, with 10 knots of wind at the start of the first race, strengthening progressively to 28 in an increasing swell, as the crews crossed the line for the last time, after four closely fought races ‘round the cans’, and returned to harbour, shattered but exhilarated.

After three exceptionally quick races during the morning, the fourth saw the Mumm 30s surfing at 17 knots and the crews gradually reducing their foresails from the No. 1 Genoa to the No. 3 and using every sail on board except for the fractional spinnaker!

During the racing there were many broaches, including Britain’s Southampton Instituteskippered by Yoann Richomme and many others that saw their spinnakers split as the wind gusted to 30 knots. “It was brilliant out there” enthused Fiona Earle of Southampton Institute.’ “We’ve learnt a lot, especially that we are not as bad as we thought!!”

“It was an excellent day’s racing and very good fun”, agreed Ian Gill of Britain’s Off Beat, “We were very pleased to keep out of trouble, though! We found the competition to be very sporting and fair”.

“18 knots of boat speed with the kite up and the mast head at code 1, is some thing else!” added the crew. “People were broaching all around us and it was quite nerve wracking, steering clear of them and their masts and streaming spinnakers out on the water. Exciting stuff!”

For the hundreds of people enjoying the afternoon sun out on the Le Havre front this Whitson bank holiday weekend, it was a spectacle of colour and close racing that they will remember for some time...
