Wind pipes up

For day two of Skandia Cowes Week. Plus photos from Dan Towers of onEdition

Monday August 9th 2004, Author: Cowes Week, Location: United Kingdom
Day two of Skandia Cowes Week came thundering to life as the predicted 15-20 knot breezes duly obliged to produce near-perfect conditions for all 924 boats across 40 classes. As the expected low pressure front slowed from the West, delaying the inevitable rain storms, the day dawned with glorious sunshine, flat waters and a brisk 14 knot southeasterly for the first start of the day out on the Black Group line.

The inshore White Group classes were slightly delayed owing to minor housekeeping matters on the Royal Yacht Squadron platform, again being run by Triumvirate 1 (Royal Southampton, Thames and Southern Yacht Clubs) with Peter Bateson as Principal Race Officer and Malcolm McKeag as Chief Race Officer.

The ever-exciting multi-hull fleet, making a very welcome debut at Skandia Cowes Week, got the show started at 1030 and created a real sight to behold as they flew away from the start-line at upwards of 13 knots. Despite only having an official Class entry of eleven, the multi-hulls never fail to impress and the start was dominated by the two 26ft Firebirds - Gerber Firebird (John Fildes, Grant Pigett and Paul Larson) and Hyper (Mike Wigmore) with the Farrier F33R, Carbon Tiger 2 (Brian Haynes) all jostling for position. As the countdown clock expired it was Gerber Firebird who held the aces.

Starting to windward of Hyper, she quickly attained her upwind speed of 13-14 knots, flying a hull as the gusts pulsed down the racecourse. With a long beat up to Mother Bank, the multihulls raced for the flattest water up the middle right of the Solent, leaving the thronging melee of pre-start boats around the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Finishing at a smidge under 1230, just as the massive 83 strong XOD Class was starting, Gerber Firebird flew across the line to take the winners gun from Hyper and claim her first win of the week after a third place yesterday. As a spectacle, the multihulls are second to none and for the thousands of shoreside spectators they are a thrilling addition to Skandia Cowes Week.

The first White Group start of the day saw a fair deal of bullying and testosterone as the 1720 and SB3 combined class produced the only general recall of the day. A plethora of these fast-planing sportsboats fell foul of the tide beneath them, being swept over the line in a pack and the Race Committee had little alternative but to restart the entire fleet. On the second go, it was Buddha's Folly (Clive Bush) who got the cleanest start just to windward of the class favourite Musto (Glenn Bourke). However by the finish, it was 3 Sad Old Blokes (Jerry Hill) who claimed victory in the SB3s and certainly lived down their name whilst Oi! (Bill Vance and John Cooper) held a 32 second victory in the hard fought 1720 class.

When the Etchells got away ten minutes later on the Squadron Line the wind had abated to around 12 knots and these fully powered-up boats headed for a windward/leeward course in the Eastern Solent. Ante Razmilovic racing in Swedish Blue, sailed an almost perfect race showing fantastic upwind pace to open a healthy gap on the chasing pack of Bushfire (Jervis Tilly) and Moonlight (Mark Downer) but there were dramas down the fleet with one holing and a dismasting. The dismasting occurred when GBR 1193 Snatch (Andrew Oddie) closely crossed GBR 1075 Extravaganza (Richard Ellis) at the first leeward mark. In the churned up waters Extravaganza clipped the transom of Snatch, catching her backstay and snapping her mast clean out of the boat,
tearing sails and effectively ending her Skandia Cowes Week.

There were other tales of woe across the fleets as the wind built in the early afternoon with spinnakers blown and minor breakages. Peter Ogden's beautiful new, black-hulled, IRM rated Swan 601, Spirit of Jethou, entangled herself on the anchor chain of a buoy marking the remains of the wreck of Henry VIII's warship, the Mary Rose, off Portsmouth. Thankfully there was no lasting damage, and sensibly Spirit of Jethou retired to check the resultant scratching to her bulb on this, her second outing in competition. There was high-drama before the start of the 1720 race as Murphy & Nye GBR 1760L (Brett Lewis) was involved in a port and starboard incident with an Etchells. The 1720 was holed just forward of the mast and was forced to accept a tow from a passing Volvo for Life RIB, sinking just as she entered the Cowes Yacht Haven! The boat builders were working frantically as this goes to press and, fingers crossed, we shall see her on the start-line tomorrow morning.

Back to the racing and a few notable results were notched up across the fleets. In Class 7 IRC the Gold Roman Bowl winning boat from this year's Round the Island Race, Whooper (Giovanni Belgrano), stamped her authority on the class taking an eight minute win from 2000 Gold Roman Bowl winner, Martyn Wheatley's H-Boat, Cloud Nine.

Graham Bailey bounced back from his OCS yesterday in the International Dragon Class to take the winner's gun and posted his first valid result of the week. In IRM, Peter Harrison's crack crew aboard Chernikeeff 2 posted another 1 minute win over his great rival Kit Hobday on Bear of Britain and this class will go down to the wire as the week progresses with Match Racing planned for the evenings of Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between these two great benefactors of British yachting.

In the National Sonata Class, Philip Williams looks to be walking away with the week already, posting his second victory aboard Sequoia while in the Sportsboat Class, last year's overall White Group winner, the J/80 Redshift of Edward Fishwick, was beaten into third place today after a convincing victory on the opening day. Honours went to the Melges 24 Wild Thing (David Franks) from the Prototype Pure 6 (Rory Moore and Richard McClure). An interesting statistic though for Redshift followers is that last year they took the overall White Group title with a score of six wins and two third places (subsequently discarded) so the pressure is on if they are to repeat last year's performance!

The Contessa 32 Class saw some of the closest racing of any class with the evergreen trio of Drumbeat (Eldred Himsworth), Blanco (Rouse, Vanner, Richards) and Polar Star (Sebastian Gardner) fighting tooth and nail to the finish. These three stayed ahead of a chasing pack, with Drumbeat taking the win and the Minema Bowl with a 58 second win.

One of the most popular wins of the day though fell to the Charlie Fish crew in the Hunter 707 Class with helmsman Iain May making a cracking start at the Beta end of the White Group starting line and showing some awesome pointing ability and power ably assisted by his hard hiking crew. Wolseley UK (Adrian Barden) pushed the Charlie Fish brigade all the way to the finish but the boys responsible for the Charlie Fish Crew Party in the GBR Challenge shed on Thursday night, held on to record a 26 second victory and scoop the Commodore's Salver trophy.

Finally the massive XOD fleet with 83 entries saw a return in part to the usual established order as Peter Baines ground out a result, taking the lead and proving un-passable as Mark Jardine led the chasing pack with fantastic down wind speed. Jardine now leads the series after yesterday's fourth placing and is aiming at his first Captain's Cup to keep the excellent Jardine family tradition alive. His father Stuart holds a record of four Captain's Cups and his Uncle, Adrian two, and all three Jardine's are competing in this year's regatta. However, Skandia Cowes Week has a nasty habit of disregarding form books and with a fleet as big the XOD's the field is wide open.

The other big variable, the weather, is again on the turn this evening with a band of rain expected to sweep across the Isle of Wight late on, leaving a light and variable wind for Monday's racing. There are many more twists and turns in store as the first weekend of Skandia Cowes Week draws to a close.
