Cammas victorious

Game set and match for Groupama

Sunday October 3rd 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: France
Franck Cammas at the helm of his trimaran Groupama, rounded off a first season for their new boat well with another two bullets - in this regatta they only dropped one out of six races, leaving Karine Fauconnier and Fred Le Peutrec to fight it out for second and Alain Gautier and Michel Desjoyeaux for fourth place in the overall ORMA Championship.

Cammas started the year on his previous Groupama trimaran winning the first grand prix of the season at La Trinite, before transferring to his new boat - as if he needed it - for the remaining Grand Prix of the season. At Fecamp he finished second and was third at Calvi, before the first Grand Prix win for the new boat today. With the Marseille Grand Prix in his pocket Cammas is the ORMA Champion for the fourth time - equalling Loick Peyron's record. Cammas has clearly set a new benchmark with his highly professional approach, a fast boat and an extremely efficient team - ( see our on board account from Fecamps).

The first race today was held in 6-10 knots. Cammas opted for the middle of the line, while Foncia, Gitana and Sopra Group stuck by the Committee Boat. Foncia immediately tacked across to the islands of Friuli to find wind. Meanwhile those out to the left got slowly lifted. Groupama got ahead and simply extended through the race finishing at least 10 boat lengths ahead of Sergio Tacchini.

For the second race, the wind had got softer and the Race Committee were forced to shorten course after just one lap. In such conditions the minimum number of tacks were the order of the day with Sopra Group, Groupama and Geant heading for the right side of the course. Meanwhile the strategists were busy working out who they needed to cover both in terms of their positions in the Grand Prix and the overall ORMA 2004 Championship.

In the Grand Prix Karine Fauconnier was just one points ahead of Fred Peutrec while Michel Desjoyeaux and Alain Gautier were struggling for fourth. In terms of the Championship leader Michel Desjoyeaux had been ousted already by Franck Cammas, but it was necessary for him to finish in front of Alain Gautier to hold second as it was for Karine Fauconnier to hang on to second place.

In the end Franck Cammas took his fifth victory followed by Michel Desjoyeaux who saved his fourth place overall in the Grand Prix, followed by Karine Fauconnier, Fred le Peutrec, Pascal Bidégorry, Alain Gautier and Philippe Monnet.
