Ainslie to helm John Merricks
The Farr 45 John Merricks was donated to the John Merricks Sailing Trust by David McLean. The trustees have in turn decided to loan the boat to the Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme for the next two years, which will in turn enable the squad to extend their knowledge of both inshore and offshore racing.
Ben Ainslie commented: “I am looking forward to racing on the Farr 45 with the Volvo RYA Keelboat sailors during Skandia Cowes Week. Being a patron of the John Merricks Sailing Trust, it means a lot to be sailing on board John Merricks for the week, and with the up and coming talent.”
Ainslie will leave Cowes on Saturday 6 August and fly to Sweden to compete in the Finn European Championships. The Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme members will then have a day to get the Farr 45 ready for the Rolex Fastnet Race.
On Tuesday 2 August members of the GB Youth Worlds Team, who have just returned from competing at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, Korea will join the crew on board. James Clarke won a Bronze medal in the 420 class at the event. Ex-Optimist World Champion Hannah Mills and her 420 crew Peggy Webster, just missed out on the medals finishing in fourth place.
