At conclusion of a light air day of match racing at the Alfa Spider Match Cup for the RC 44s

Thousands of spectators, ashore and on hundreds of chase boats enjoyed the show in Trieste this afternoon for the final for the Alfa Spider Match Cup. The wind was very light, but the good light wind performances of the RC 44s, sailing their first ever regatta, allowed for a serious competition.

“We lost the first race against Mascalzone Latino," recounts Julien Di Biase, crew on board Team Omega and RC 44 Class Manager. "We got a penalty during the pre-start and never managed to get back.” The same happened during the second race: Team Omega got a penalty during the pre-start, but this time, Coutts and his team managed to take the lead, and had just enough time to perform a 360° turn before crossing the arrival line in front of the Italian team. The third race was easier for Coutts and his team, who led the race throughout and won the event.

The race for third position, between the Japanese team Beecom and the Croatian Cro-A-Sail, was also very hard. The crew skippered by Isao Mita did a fantastic job during the first race of the day by beating the Croatian favourites, before losing the second match. The last regatta unfortunately couldn’t take place because of travel arrangements.

Tomorrow Sunday, the RC 44 designer Russell Coutts and Andrej Justin will compete in the famous Barcolana regatta - the biggest single start regatta in the world with 1730 yachts expected on the line.
