Swan Cup swells
The Swan Cup is the jewel in Nautor Swan's crown and acts as a showcase for all that Nautor represents - style and glamour with world respected craftsmanship and true competitive spirit. It is this all encompassing 'Spirit of Swan' that has previously attracted world renowned sailors and celebrities, from super model, Claudia Schiffer to international sailing legend, Paul Cayard. The dramatic coastline of Sardinia provides the perfect backdrop for what is fast becoming the world's largest gathering of quality yachts, with a social calendar to match.
Enrico Chieffi, The Nautor Group Marketing Director, remarked on the significance of the event; "The Swan Cup is Nautor's Swan's single most important event, not only because it brings the largest gathering of Swans from around the world to one place for a competitive regatta but also stands Nautor apart from other builders by reinforcing the relationship with our owners."
He continued; "The Swan Cup 2002 will prove to be bigger and better than 2000 with an expected increase in attendance. We are being hosted again by the newly refurbished Yacht Club Costa Smerelda, who never falter in their professionalism and support for the regatta, providing what can only be described as the most stylish of sailing events!"
As expected, the entry list contains sailors from across the globe competing for the Swan 'World Cup'. Within the 105 Swans confirmed so far, 21 nations are represented, spanning four continents, from China to Chile and France to Finland. The impressive list of contenders include award winning boats such as the newly built Italian Swan 45, La Forza del Destino, holder of the Giraglia Rolex Cup, and last year's Swan American Regatta winner, Swan 56 Lolita that will make the trip from the USA in order to continue her run of success.
In addition, the big boats within Nautor's extensive range will be present, such as the Swan 82RS, Solleone, owned by Nautor's Chairman, Leonardo Ferragamo and, racing for the first there will be a rare chance to see the largest of all Swans, the 112ft, No Logic.
31 different models from the entire Swanline will be represented at this year's regatta as a real tribute to the quality and ability of these beautiful boats. One yacht in particular that promises to provide a new and exciting dimension to the Swan Cup is the Swan 45. Launched at the end of last year, this model is a new breed of yacht, encompassing both the elements of a true cruiser and a high performance racer. With this new breed of yacht comes Nautor's most ambitious project to date - a Swan 45 Class. The Swan Cup is the perfect setting for the launch of what is soon to be a globally established class.
The programme of events sees five days of racing in a variety of formats providing the opportunity to gauge the Swans performance in all situations. Entrants will be graded into four classes, with daily results for each class and overall. All those in attendance will wish to emulate the success of Theo and Martin Kingsbergen's Swan 68 Defiance, the overall champions in 2000.
The Swan Cup is not just about racing; it is also about "The Spirit of Swan". As with all Swan events, the social side is second to none and the Swan Cup is no exception. The obvious passion for Swans is mirrored on the shore side as a mix of Italian glamour and style set the tone for a programme of social events that will join together a whole spectrum of guests. The newly refurbished Yacht Club Costa Smeralda offers the perfect venue and guarantees to provide a Race Village that will truly emulate the 'Spirit of Swan', giving Swan owners and spectators a memorable week, both on and off the water.
