14 countries to race Dragon Europeans
The Championship will be held at Kinsale Yacht Club and will run from 15-23 August. The competition will consist of six races, one per day from 18-23 August inclusive.
All competitors will have successfully completed a lengthy selection process to get the opportunity to represent their countries in the Championship.
The Irish fleet are well positioned to put in a strong performance, with Johnny Ross Murphy of the Royal St. George Yacht Club winning the Grand Prix in Douarnenez last month, in which many of the sailors due in Kinsale participated. Yet Ross Murphy had to settle for fourth position behind fellow club members Neil Hegarty and Andrew Craig and Kinsale’s James Matthews at the East Coast championships last weekend, showing the wealth of talent that Ireland will be presenting.
Kinsale Yacht Club hosted the Mirror European Championship in 1998, which was won by local sailors Matthias Hellstern and Cathal O’Donovan. It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that there may be Irish, or even Kinsale, European Champions at the club again this August.
