Once again the new kids on the block of the one design world, the SB3s had a healthy fleet for their class start in the Royal Southern June Regatta.

A different boat winning each race shows just how close and competitive the newest asymmetric one design racing really is. Bandit (Martin Head) opened the scoring with a win in the first race, followed by wins from Wee Jamarama (S Hawthorn) in race 2 and Turbo Services (John Hansen) in race 3.

Sunday dawned hot and windless, with cats and pigeons abundant later. In race 4, Wee Jamarama led, to be overhauled on the 2nd beat by Stress Bunny. Sadly they led most of the fleet the wrong way. As confusion reigned, Julie Fawcett led four boats around the correct course to win the race.

Some of the original leaders later corrected, butbfinished out of time, expensive in a no discard series! It also caused Turbo Services to miss the start of race 5, thus counting 2 DNFs and gaining the wooden spoon for the week-end. E.R.(Tony the phony) started well, led and consolidated to win race 5 comfortably and gain 3rd place for the w/e. By consistency and counting a finish in the 'Cats and Pigeons' race, Cardinal Puff (Rich Beaman) made his trip from Cornwall worthwhile, winning the event. 2nd was Bandit, similarly consistent.

After a class start in the RTI race next w/e, the class moves to SeaView YC on 28/29 June for the first leg of its Henri Lloyd sponsored Midsummer Championships. Visit www.svyc.org.uk for more info.
