Farr 40s join Ermenegildo Zegna Trophy
This annual meeting will be held, as normal, in the waters off Portofino on 14-16 May.
First held in 1982, the Ermenegildo Zegna Trophy Spring Regatta opens the annual maxi yachts season of the European circuit. The event, organised by the Italian Yacht Club with the co-operation of the Comune di Portofino, is open to yachts over 55 feet, subdivided into Classes IMS (ORC Club) and Wally.
This year the entry list is also open to two One Design classes: the Nautor's Swan 45, - making its second appearance at the event - and the Farr 40, taking part in the Ermenegildo Zegna Trophy - Spring Regattas for the first time.
During the event, the "A life for Sailing" Award will be presented. In 1983 Aldo Zegna and Beppe Croce, at that time presidents of Ermenegildo Zegna and of the Yacht Club Italiano, respectively, decided to introduce this award, now presented every two years, as a deserved tribute to those who have dedicated their lives and careers to sailing, significantly contributing to spreading its popularity.
The winner of the 2004 prize, according to the jury, is Argentinian architect Germán Frers, naval architect and designer of hundreds of world-famous hulls. An interesting meeting with the winner and other internationally renowned designers confirms, once again, the coupling of sport and culture, something that has always promoted by the Zegna family.
