Showdown for AC sailors

At day one of the Nation's Cup in Trieste

Monday June 16th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Italy
On the first day of racing for this the fourth Nation’s Cup, four races were staged.

Due to unstable weather conditions, the first start was not until 14:15, when the first race saw Alinghi's Jochen Schuemann beat the One World boat driven by the Australian James Spithill by just 10 seconds.

In the second race the Italian Mascalzone Latino team with Vasco Vascotto at the helm were beaten by the Swedes on Victory Challenge, led by Magnus Holmberg. An error in the pre-start for the Italians put them behind the Swede and despite a great effort from Vascotto, he could not close in on Holmberg.

The other Italian sailor in the competition did much better. Tommaso Chieffi skipper of the American Oracle Racing team was able to dispatch GBR Challenge's Andy Beadsworth. Following an impeccable start by Chieffi he crossed the finish line 22 seconds ahead of Beadsworth.

The fourth race saw the Swedes race against One World. This race started at 18:30 and was the hardest fought of the afternoon and was held in stronger breeze. Holmberg held the lead by the narrowest of margins only to be pipped at the post by Spithill just a few metres from the finish line.

Tomorrow will see a conclusion to the first Round Robin. Weather conditions permitting, the second Round Robin will take place on Wednesday and Thursday.
