Melges 24 fleet heads for Scarlino
62 boats from 13 nations have arrived at La Marina di Scarlino for the second round of the Volvo Cup, for the Melges 24. Nine races are scheduled to take place from this Friday until (9-11 April). Some of the best European sailors will be facing off on the Gulf of Follonica with the Islands of Elba and Montecristo serving as a backdrop.
The 26 foreign crews hail from Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa and Switzerland.
Among the top guns South African Ian Ainslie (ex-Team Shosholoza), Estonian Tonu Toniste, who won 470 Olympic bronze, Lorenzo Bressani, Melges 24 World Champion 2008, Flavio Favini, who raced on Mascalzone Latino during the 32nd America’s Cup, European 49er class champion Pietro Sibello, assisted by the 470 World Champion Gabrio Zandonà calling tactics.
The competitors looking forward to competing on a race course that has proven itself to be one of the best in the Mediterranean. The weather forecast is calling for a Mistral beginning in the early afternoon of Friday and carrying through until Saturday.
The Race Committee will be presided by the Director of the Club Nautico Scarlino Carlo Giuliano Tosi, only Italian race official race chosen for the Olympic Games in London in 2012. On the water umpires will be coordinated by Luca Babini.
The Melges 24 Volvo Cup has been organised by Media VIP and the Club Nautico Scarlino.
