Round the island - singlehanded

RIOW Solo to take place on 24 April

The sixth edition of RIOW Solo, a testing 50-mile singlehanded race around the Isle of Wight will start from Egypt Point - Cowes, starting at 0700 on Saturday 24 April 2009 and will proceed anti clockwise round the Isle of Wight. The race is aimed at monohull and multihull yachts from 25-40ft LOA and there is also a special class for Minis.

This event is the latest in the innovative series of singlehanded races organised by Solo Offshore Racing Club Limited (formally Racing at Petit Bateau limited) over the last seven years. One objective of RIOW Solo is to encourage skippers who are new to this exciting discipline to gain experience in the familiar and convenient location of the Solent, this is the first race of the Solent Solo Series for 2010.

There will be ample opportunity to meet fellow skippers at the Island Sailing Club on the Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner and the prizegiving on Saturday. Professional Meteorologist Chris Tibbs will be giving a weather briefing at the Island Sailing Club at 19:00 on 23 April. Berthing has being booked at Shepards Wharf Marina for early race entrants.

Race Director Peter Olden is pleased with the quality of entries so far and in addition to welcoming back many of the established solo sailors, also expects a number of new skippers taking part in their first solo race. Boats will race under IRC, MOCRA and Open non handicap racing.
