New match racing academy
A new international match racing academy has been launched today at the Portimão Portugal Match Cup, Stage 4 of the 2010 Tour. The ‘Sun Sailing Academy’ is the first match racing development facility of its kind for Portugal.
A fleet of six SM40 race boats are available year round to national and international match racers who are keen to develop or maintain their boat on boat race skills. The Academy is dedicated to keeping the fleet in top racing condition allowing for excellent training. The race course/training area is quickly accessed out of Portimão Marina where teams stay on site in chalet style apartments.
Justino de Sá Machado, President of Grupo Sá Machado, has followed the development of match racing in Portugal over the last seven years, “The academy represents an investment of 1 million Euros that will launch Portugal into match race training at an international level. It will increase our country’s revenue and add to the development of tourism, with the fleet of 6 boats operating the whole year”.
As well as the race yachts, the academy provides; support boats, race committee boat and race course equipment such as; buoys, radios and flags. This is all the essential equipment to run international level racing in the entrance to the Harbour of Portimão throughout the year.
