Js to race in Newport
The first event in the J Class Global Calendar of events has been announced by the class association. Velsheda, Ranger and Shamrock V will compete in the regatta to be held out of Fort Adams with five races to be staged over 15-19 June. Newport, Americans would argue is the spiritual home of the America's Cup and in particular the Js which raced there between 1930 and 1937, over which time just ten examples were built.
While three Js are currently entered in the Newport event, the class and the organisers, Sail Newport, are hoping to entice more to take part. The boats will be based at the Newport Shipyard with crews staying at the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina.
Lars Loftus, Captain of Velsheda commented: Our team looks forward to racing in Newport. Brad Read of Sail Newport has given us an exciting course inside thebay which will be very testing for our 30 race crew."
Dan Jackson, Captain of Ranger, added: "We look forward to competing against Velsheda on Ranger's historic home waters."
Newport marks the first of a four regatta program developed by the class culminating in a race around the Isle of Wight in July 2012 on the original 1851 America's Cup course.
Secretary of the J Class Association, David Pitman concluded: "We hope to provide five days of spectacular racing and with the continued support of the State and the city of Newport, we look forward to planning arrangements for a major regatta in Newport during 2014, featuring up to 10 yachts."
