Big boat trophy
Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority was at the heart of the excitement of the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week yesterday with the presentation of a specially-designed trophy to the winner of the Big Boat Race.
ADTA was the key sponsor for the three-day series which began on Tuesday. George David, skipper of the 100ft maxi Rambler 100, received the trophy on behalf of his crew from Sultan Al Muhairi, Project Manager, ADTA, on the Cowes Yacht Haven main stage in front of a large crowd of visitors.
Speaking of his win, David said: “You need strategy, team work and a little bit of luck. It’s great when it all comes together”.
The Big Boat Race enables boats to prepare for the annual Rolex Fastnet Race on Sunday 14 August, when ADTA’s state-of-the-art Volvo Open 70 racing yacht Azzam and her Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing crew will make their international debut.
Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing will contend the 2011/2012 Volvo Ocean Race which, for the first time in its history, will stop over in Abu Dhabi, this New Year. A new, purpose-built Destination Village is being built to host the yachts during their two-week stopover on the emirate’s stunning Corniche.
Visitors to Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week have been queuing up at the ADTA hospitality tent to have their photo taken with one of the two peregrine falcons, sample local Arabic coffee or have henna designs applied to their hands. Others are lining up to compete in the ‘winching challenge’ and win a VIP holiday for two in Abu Dhabi.
