Michel Desjoyeaux and Foncia win 2011 Vulcain Trophy

Season concludes at the D35's Grand Prix d'Antibes

The final day of the Vulcain Trophy's Grand Prix d'Antibes for the Swiss D35 catamaran fleet, saw four races sailed in a 10 knot northeasterly.

Michel Desjoyeaux's Foncia ended up winning with three teams able to claim second with two races remaining. Ultimately it was the young crew of REC Carrefour Prevention skippered by Jerome Clerc that came home second overall with Guy de Picciotto's Zen Too ahead of Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi and Torbjorn Tornqvist's Artemis Racing (see Paul Cayard's report below).

With his latest victory this weekend at the Grand Prix d'Antibes, Michel Desjoyeaux and his Foncia crew also won the Vulcan Trophy 2011 for the seven regatta D35 catamaran circuit.

"Game Set and Match!" commented Desjoyeaux. "We've won the Vulcan Trophy with a win in the last event and that's great. We started poorly as we finished eighth in the first Grand Prix. Team Foncia then managed to win in Crans without me. Our form returned. We won the Geneva-Rolle-Geneva a few weeks later. But this is a championship and the aim should be consistency. Do not take risks, but be good and sharp all the time. That's what we managed to do.

"From the outset the crew was a delight. It was very hard throughout the season. The challenge was tough, because we had never sailed together before. On board each took his place and we found a good fluidity. This was exceptional against teams like Alinghi where the crew has sailed together for nearly 10 years. We never rested on our laurels. We have always queried things. That allowed us to grow and get where we are today."

Paul Cayard reports:

The D35 season came to a close today here in Antibes. The wind gods were a lot more pleasant to the fleet today providing 6-11 knots of wind which allowed for four races.

Artemis Racing had some up and down scores and finished 5th in the event. This was two positions better than Velti Group (7th) who we were trying to pass for the a third for the season. In the end we came up one point short for the season and finished 4th overall. Still not a bad result for our first season.

The top of the class was Foncia once again who won the event here, as well as the season championship. Hats off to Michele Desjoyaux and the Foncia team! Alinghi finished 4th here in Antibes and second for the season.

The boats will go back to Geneva now for the winter. The 2012 season will start there in May.

I am off to Valencia tonight for a day in the office tomorrow before heading to Croatia tomorrow night for the RC44 event there next week.
