Calafat joins Quantum
Quantum Sail Design Group is pleased to welcome Jordi Calafat to its team in Barcelona, Spain.
A Grand Prix and high-end sail design specialist, Calafat will provide technical support to the Quantum design and sales teams, as well as support the development of the company’s IQ Technology suite of sail development tools.
Calafat’s distinguished career makes him an ideal candidate to work with the quality control manager in establishing standards for Big Boat and Grand Prix sails and to review top-level class racing designs for the Quantum® team.
Calafat is also serving as strategist for Quantum Racing, joining the team for the Mediterranean races in the 2013 52 Super Series. He was on board for the Trofeo Conde De Godo in Barcelona where Quantum Racing took first place.
Calafat started sailing in 1980, and in just three years he won the Optimist World Championship. A naturally talented sailor, his success continued winning the 1985 420 Junior World Championship, placing second at the 470 Worlds in 1989 and 1990, then taking sixth at the 1991 470 Worlds. During the same period, he became even more hands-on, learning how to design and build sails.
In 1992, Calafat won a gold medal in the 470 class at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He also holds several world and European titles in various sailing classes and keel yachts. The Spaniard served as strategist for Alinghi and is a two-time Volvo Ocean Race participant.
