Melges 32 season kicks off in Europe
Thirteen Melges 32 teams are lining up for the 2014 Audi Tron Sailing Series, organised and managed by B.Plan Sport&Events (BPSE) in collaboration with Melges Europe.
The first event, hosted by the Comitato Grande Vela, will start this Friday and conclude on Sunday, on the Bay of Naples.
Among the fleet, is Mascalzone Latino, helmed by Vincenzo Onorato, who will be racing with British two time Olympic 470 silver medalist Nick Rogers. A few other Olympic giants will also be sailing aboard Filippo Pacinotti's Brontolo, where Gabrio Zandonà is tactician. Aboard Alessandro Rombelli's Stig will be Freddy Lööf, and on Giangiacomo Serena di Lapagio's G Spot, with Portuguese Atlanta 470 bronze medallist Hugo Rocha.
Malafemmena, Synergy and Celadrin Vitamina will each have an Ivaldi brother on board (Matteo, Michele and Francesco respectively), all top Olympic sailor, racing for the first time against one another.
Eduardo Lupi and Massimo Pessina's Torpyone will have a new crew including Lorenzo Bressani, however there are few crew changes on board Riccardo Simoneschi's Audi Italia Sailing Team and Audi e-tron of Mauro Mocchegiani, who has Branko Brcin as tactician.
While in Naples, the boats will be fitted with Torqeedo electric outboards, an innovation for this year's Audi tron Sailing Series, to help make the event environmentally friendly.
As in the past, the start of the Audi Tron Sailing Series means the return of the Audi test drives too. Competitors are able to demo the A3 g-tron, RS6 Avant, SQ5, and A1 SB Admired. In addition to main sponsor Audi, the Audi Tron is supported by official sponsors Kuehne+Nagel, Torqeedo electric motors and technical partners such as the Ente Fiera di Genova, Nespresso and Olicor.
