Chrchester Harbour club receives Volvo RYA Champion Club status

Bosham Sailing Club has been awarded the esteemed Volvo RYA Champion Club status for their commitment to youth sailing and delivery of high level training at their club. Team GBR Paralympic sailor, Helena Lucas together with Alison Murphy from Cambridge Garage (Portsmouth) presented the award to Andrew Johns, Bosham Club Commodore, at the annual Cadet Prize-giving ceremony on Saturday 13 December 2008. Helena also enjoyed spending time with the young sailors, inspiring them with her experiences at the Beijing Paralympics.

On presenting the award Helena said: “It’s great to see kids so enthusiastic in sailing and already dreaming about one day competing for Great Britain at the Olympics and I am sure we will see some of these young faces standing on the podium in the future.”

Guest of honor, Team Volvo for life sailor Helena Lucas, is Britain’s top 2.4mR sailor and represented Team GBR competing at this year’s Paralympics in China. Helena was born with no thumbs and only having two functioning fingers on each hand. She started sailing at the age of 8 and is a shining example of how important competitive racing and programmes like the Volvo RYA Champion Club programme are to young sailors.
