Ravussin into the lead

Among Route du Rhum tris as Guillemot pulls into Azores

Friday November 15th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
Overnight the boats have been making great speeds in the strong northerly airflow, as they have been passing to the southeast of the Azores. With Marc Guillemot pulling into Punta Delgada to change his solent and staysail, the lead in the 60ft trimaran class has passed to Swiss skipper Steve Ravussin, who must be elated as this is his first singlehanded transatlantic race in his 60ft trimaran, Technomarine.

Guillemot is not the only skipper to be making a pitstop - Alain Gautier on Sodebo is heading into Madeira with similar beams delamination problems to Sodebo. He too is retiring.

On board Géant is carrying out a pit-stop at Madeira where he is due to arrive this afternoon. Belgacom left port this morning while Bayer CropSciences and Bonduelle will leave port during the day.

In the monohull class Kingfisher and Ecover are still locked in combat. Sill is currently in Madeira where her mainsail - torn over the third reef - is being replaced. At present the stiff northerlies are abating, but the wind direction is better for Sill. The leaders are currently heading southwest and must constantly stay low or risk encroaching on the windless area of the Azores high which is slowly shifting east, while Sill should be able to blast out of Madeira in near perfect blast reaching conditions.

Ahead the wind is set to back further round to the north east providing Trade Wind style conditions but putting the boats increasingly onto a dead downwind course which may require the leaders to gybe south to stay clear of the light winds of the high.
