An absence of wind and calm seas were the leading protagonists in the long leg of the Giraglia Rolex Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Italiano, which saw a record number of 185 boats leaving from St. Tropez yesterday at midday.

An 8 knot southerly wind blew across the starting line which increased slightly during the course of the day.

When the boats rounded Levante Island heading for the Giraglia rock at around 1800 yesterday evening, a 10 knot wind was blowing: Pigi Loro Piana's My Song took first place (at 17.34) followed by Raffaele Raiola's Idea (at 17.44) and Arien Van Vemde's Sotto Voce (17.46). Bugia Bianca the Swan 70 owned by Massimo Dentice came in fourth (at 18.01), while L'Oreal president, Lindsay Owen Jones' Magic Carpet made fifth place (at 18.09).

The wind dropped once again during the night to around 4-5 knots: My Song earned ground and steamed four miles ahead of Idea.

Early this afternoon on Friday 21 June, the first boats rounded the Giraglia rock, north of Corsica, accompanied by a 4-5 knot south-westerly wind. The positions are as follows:

1. My Song (15.07)
2. Idea (16.34)

The race may be followed in real time at the Yacht Club Italiano Web site thanks to satellite instruments that have been mounted aboard twenty of the largest and fastest craft, transmitting their positions and giving visitors the chance to watch the race unfold.

The fleet is now making its way to Genoa where the first boats are expected at the Yacht Club Italiano by dawn.
