Close, but no cigar

Team Tonic completes her lap of Ireland

Wednesday June 26th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom
Nick Hewson's Team Tonic arrived in Wicklow, southern Ireland in the early hours of this morning, first home in the Bord Faitle Round Ireland Race. The Farr 52 crossed the line at 1:34 and has now gone up to Dun Laoghaire because there's not enough water in Wicklow.

With the wind going soft towards the finish Team Tonic was eight hours outside the 3 days, 4 hours and 23 minutes record set by a former Whitbread 60 in 1998.

Second placed Fenix, the Swan 60 of Richard Balding, is expected this morning with the bulk of the fleet due into Wicklow at lunchtime. Only then can the handicap winner be ascertained, but a representative of Wicklow Sailing Club says it will be tight between4-5 boats.

Updates follow.
