Potential handicap winner arrives in SAP Cape-Rio race

Monday February 3rd 2003, Author: Ronelda Visser, Location: Transoceanic
Potential handicap winner Baleka joined the victims of Cabo Frio when she finished the SAP Cape to Rio 2003 on a perfectly clear day in sweltering heat. By the time the Gauteng crew crossed the line on Sunday afternoon, the mercury had risen to 37deg Celsius in sweltering humidity.

Monday dawned cooler with a low pressure system just off the Brazilian coastline bringing some cloudy weather and stronger breezes. According to race officer Eric Wells, this will probably help to bring in the boats quicker.

British entry Safari CTW, skippered by Dave Tideswell, also finished late on Sunday (21h00 SA time). The Fast 42 Investec and Brazilian entry Acalantis were due to finish by mid-morning today and KwaZulu Natal entry Aquila and Keith Mattison’s FTI Flyer should reach Rio by lunchtime today.

With two days to go before the official cut-off on Wednesday, 5 February 2003, fifteen yachts remain at sea, but it is expected that most will make the deadline as the rally fleet is allowed to motor for a distance of 200 miles.
