Peter Holmberg has won the debut race of the Alpe Adria Sailing Tour 2003. The American skipper dominated the first leg of the race which started in Venice, and after 22 days will proceed through three countries - Italy, Slovenia and Croatia - taking the twelve competing teams to the final port of Dubrovnik, Croatia.

In the waters mirroring the city of Trieste, at about five o’clock in the morning, the rest of the fleet finally finished the race of the Alpe Adria Sailing Tour, event organised by the Se.Ri.Gi Shipyard of Aquileia and the Dentesano Hams of Udine.

After the start on Thursday morning, 1 May from Venice, the 12 identical Solaris 36 one design boats, all headed for the city of Trieste. The victory of Holmberg was awarded because he gained his margin mile after mile. The boat, BMWTomic Team arrived at the finish line a little before midnight, followed by the boat City of Split skippered by Ivan Kuret, which preceeded the boat City of Aquileia skippered by Marco Augelli from Trieste, and his Blue Wave Sailing Team. Marco Lostuzzi, recent winner of the 'Oscar of Sailing' for his Solaris 36 OD project, is racing with the City of Aquileia boat.

The boats finished a 54 mile route and the teams were tired by the light weather conditions having to deal with about 7 knots from the southeast, severely slowing the boats and demoralising the teams.

Obviously happy to have just won the race, Peter Holmberg commented "this is my first offshore race in ten years, and I haven’t lost my touch! The crew worked really well, and it has to be so with these boats, you can’t relax. It was a good battle with City of Split, who gave us some difficult times during the race."

In eighth position were the young University students of the CUS, which is the Sport Center of the University of Trieste. They raced with the boat Friuli Venezia Giulia. For the students it’s an average result, from which they can only do better in the following races.

Tommorrow the racing starts from Trieste at 11am at the Marina San Giusto, operating HQ of the event. The Sailing Society of the Barcola Grignano, home of the infamous Barcolana will organize tomorrow's racing, which will leave Trieste for Grado and Muggia, 25 miles away.
