Bols lines up for 24 hour record

News from Gordon Kay's new 93ft super maxi

Monday April 7th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Australasia
Gordon Kay's newly launched supermaxi Bols is due to set off from Christchurch, New Zealand tomorrow on an attempt to break the 24 hour monohull record.

The record currently stands at 484 miles, set by John Kostecki's illbruck Challenge in the Gulf Stream during the transatlantic leg of the last Volvo Ocean Race.

The new Bols at 93ft should have considerably longer legs that illbruck and it will be interesting to see if she can break illbruck's record straight out of the box without 2-4 knots of Gulf Stream for assistance. If she does she will be emulating Steve Fossett's PlayStation which also was launched in New Zealand and immediately went out and took the outright 24 hour up from 540 miles in a day to 580 miles.

On board for the attempt will be:

Rodney Ardern NZ
Richard Bouzaid NZ
Ben Costello NZ
Justin Ferris NZ
Richard Fryer IRL
Michael Firmin AUS
Marek Galkiewicz PL
Conan Hunt NZ
Maciej Jankelewickz PL
