Saturday April 12th 2003, Author: James Boyd, Location: Transoceanic
Grand Pavois Organisation, who run are running the 2003 Transat Charente-Maritime-Bahia (otherwise known as the Mini Transat) have announced the six skippers with Derogation to the Calendar of Qualification (otherwise known as wildcard entries). These are for the most part late overseas entries, as stipulated in articles 8a and 8b of the Classe Mini rules.

And the lucky six are:

Jonathan McKee - USA - proto N°247
Yaniv Mass - ISR - proto N°416
Gustavo Pachecco - BRA - proto N°34
Daniel Schaffer - ISR - proto N°414
Adam Seamans - USA - Pogo N°175
Donald Wright - NZL - proto N°227

These six competitors must comply with the same qualifications as the other competitors. This includes a 1,000 mile qualifier course and the completion of at least two events, single or double-handed, in the official Mini calendar that amount to more than 1,000 miles of racing. One of these races must comprise a leg of more than 500 miles.

This announcement by the class means that the six wildcard entries have a on official entry list of the Mini Transat and have a guaranteed slot up until the end of the Transgascogne (ie 30 July), PROVIDED that they have completed all the necessary qualification. If they do not then their place will be reallocated to another skipper on the waiting list.

Significantly those on the waiting list include both Chris Sayer and Liz Wardley, both featured recently on The Daily Sail, whose boats are now complete in Auckland.

Donald Wright (aka Jaws) is another interesting entry. Jaws is a Whitbread veteran of considerable standing and long term crewman for Peter Blake. He sailed the Whitbread on board Ceramco New Zealand and then in the all-conquering Steinlager II ketch. He was also on board ENZA New Zealand for their 1994 Jules Verne Trophy record. He is racing the Finot-Conq designed Mini built by Marco Lefebre for 470 sailor Eric Renault to race in the 1999 Mini Transat.
