New event for FICO calendar

And it starts next week from New York...

At an Extraordinary General Meeting on 3 April the members of FICO voted unanimously in favour of integrating the Around Alone race into their World Championship and adding the next edition of the race to the 2002 race calendar.

According to the latest FICO rules, the winner of the Around Alone will receive 200 points due to the arduous nature of the course. This is good news for FICO, the international association of race organisers, as it further internationalises their championship - it has always been a predominantly French affair.

At present the FICO-Lacoste World Championship Rankings for Skippers looks like this:

1. Roland Jourdain FRA 280.5 points
2. Ellen MacArthur GB 231.5 points
3. Michel Desjoyeaux FRA 230.0 points
4. John Kostecki USA 200.0 points
5. Franck Cammas FRA 163.0 points
6. Dominique Wavre CH 160.5 points
7. Neal McDonald GB 160.0 points
8. Alain Gautier FRA 157.0 points
9. Loick Peyron FRA 141.0 points
10. Grant Dalton NZ 140.0 points

Aside from Around Alone, the remaining scoring events in the FICO calendar this year include next week's Fecamps Grand Prix for the 60ft trimarans and, of course, the Route du Rhum in November.
