Multihull sailor extraordinaire, Helena Darvelid has been awarded The Swedish International Offshore Yachting Prize (Vandringspriset Nakterhuset) presented by the Swedish Sailing Association (SSF).

The Prize is awarded to a sailor/sailors that have made the best achievement within the International Ocean Racing scene.

Darvelid, originally from Gotland/Sweden now lives in Southampton and has been racing multihulls for many years including a two handed round Britain with Brian Thompson, prior to her and Thompson joining up with Steve Fossett, with whom they established a deluge of new records on board the 60ft trimaran Lakota.

In 2001 Darvelid has a brief spell on board monohulls, skippering the Open 60 Alphagraphics in the EDS Atlantic Challenge. Since then she has had substantially more success as co-skipper of Tracy Edwards' Maiden2, holder of four world records including the outright 24 hour record and the Round Britain and Ireland. She briefly rejoined Steve Fossett's PlayStation team to set two additional records on the American's maxi cat last year.
