Thursday October 21st 2010, Author: James Boyd, Location: France

Having left on Tuesday on the delivery trip from Lorient to Saint-Malo for the start of the Route du Rhum - La Banque Postale, so Pierre-Yves Lautrou's Class 40 L'Express-Sapmer was rammed by a fishing boat. The incident occurred at around 2000 last night.

L'Express-Sapmer was taken in tow last night by the SNBSM rescue services and has been moored in the Duguay-Trouin basin in St Malo awaiting a full damage assessment.

Lautrou, a well known journalist with L'Express newspaper commented: “We were off Cape Fréhel, when a fishing vessel collided with us at around 20:00. Tanguy Leglatin who made the delivery with me, was down below and I had just joined him when we felt a violent shock. The fishing vessel unfortunately did not stop and the boat was holed on the port side, plus there was damage on the deck. Fortunately we did not dismast. We continued on towards Saint-Malo. Then the volunteers of the SNBSM towed us into the port where we locked in at around 4:00 this morning."

It is still too early to say where the damage will prevent L'Express-Sapmer from competing in the Route du Rhum which starts in 10 days' time.
