Fuel Cell Systems has added SFC Energy’s EFOY fuel cell range of direct methanol fuel cells to its product portfolio. Offering clean, quiet on-board power generation the range is well suited for use in marine applications.

Fuel cells have the potential to replace on-board generators that boat owners currently use to supply auxiliary power and to recharge batteries. Simply connecting the fuel cell to the batteries will provide constant charge and reliable on-board power. The methanol fuel cartridges used to power the fuel cell allow boat owners to safely carry enough fuel to last for several weeks.

The fuel cells are lightweight so they’re easily portable, and compact so they don’t take up much space on the boat. And unlike traditional generators that are noisy, the EFOY fuel cell range is silent when operational. As a clean source of power – the only emissions are heat and water vapor – the fuel cells can be kept indoors.

“Now, boat owners can drop anchor wherever they want without compromising on comfort and safety,” said Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO at SFC Energy. “The fuel cells have proved immensely popular across Europe with over 15,000 units sold in the leisure market to date. The time is right for the UK market to get on-board and experience the benefits EFOY fuel cell technology has to offer.”

“The power market has moved on and it’s time the marine industry did the same,” said Tom Chicken, Chief Technical Officer at Fuel Cell Systems. “Fuel cells are making a huge splash in the industry by offering clean, quiet, on-board power generation so boat owners no longer need to suffer the dirt, noise, and inconvenience of traditional generators.”

The EFOY fuel cell range is available in five sizes: 2200, 1600, 1200, 900, 600. The size relates to the charging capacity in watt-hours of the fuel cell per day. Prices range from £1,750-£4,615 with methanol cartridges costing £48 for 5 litres or £73 for 10 (prices exclude VAT).
