Approaching the Doldrums it appears to have been a difficult night for Thomas Coville on board Sodebo. Having been ahead of pacesetter Francis Joyon's IDEC since he set out from Brest last weekend, this morning for the first time, Sodebo has fallen behind. The reason it seems was something of disaster that occurred last night, in shifty winds when in a squall, the maxi-trimaran presumably crash gybed breaking three battens in her mainsail.
Coville managed to replace all three battens by 0500 this morning - one can be imagine the scale of this task singlehanded on a 105ft trimaran - and since then he has retired to his bunk to recover. This may be the reason Sodebo, since around 0600 has been on a rather unusual course of southeast.
At present Sodebo is on the northern edge of the Doldrums proper, which still appear to start at around 4-5°N, so when Coville surfaces he will be in for another difficult and tiring day.
