Thomas Coville and Sodebo remain on the back foot in their bid to break Francis Joyon's singlehanded non-stop round the world record. As the numbers above illustrate, over the last 48 hours the 105ft red trimaran has continued to lose ground on Joyon's pace, her deficit now up from 1211 to 1359 miles. Unfortunately for Coville, apart from 40 miles he managed to reclaim on the 13th, this has been the trend since he entered the South Atlantic.

As Coville said, when we spoke to him earlier in the week - he realised Joyon's pace to Cape Leeuwin was almost unbeatable, his predecessor having been able to 'cut the corner' of the St Helena high in the South Atlantic followed by a fast transition into the Southern Ocean and being able to ride the same front most of the way to Australia. Coville on the other hands is having no such luck and is having to make the best of the weather being served up to him. It is not that he has been slow - he has averaged 20-22 knots consistently through the last 48 hours for example. It is just that Joyon was three knots faster... It was around this time on his lap of the planet that the French hero notched up a singlehanded 24 hour record, covering 616 miles at an average of 25.6 knots.

At present Sodebo looks set to sail through the Crozet islands, some 50 miles to her east. The breeze is chilly southerly between a high to the west and a depression to the ENE. This scenario looks set to continue until around Tuesday when the wind will back into the more favourable southwest as Sodebo approaches the longitude of Cape Leeuwin.

We hope Coville knows the Crozet Islands are there for AFP are reporting that overnight there was a massive, but thankfully temporary GPS/compass meltdown on Sodebo - this is thought to have been caused by a giant solar flare (read more about this here)
