Thomas Coville and Sodebo continue to make inroads into solo round the world record holder Francis Joyon and IDEC's virtual lead, having closed in from 659 miles to 545 over the last 48 hours. On her ascent from Cape Horn, the red 105ft trimaran, at 44°S, is still very much in the Southern Ocean and making good speed in 25-30 knot northwesterlies.

While Sodebo's progress is good, she still has the St Helena high to tackle ahead of her and from her course it is unclear how Coville intends to deal with this. As mentioned in our last update, the high is located relatively south at around 40°S and fortunately for Coville its centre is reasonably well to the west so it seems likely that he will do what Joyon did and attempt to skirt around to the east of it in favourable winds. Aside from being a more pleasant ride and less stressful on the boat, the advantage of this is that it would allow Coville to get some vital easting in enabling Sodebo to be lifted up on to course, far enough east to pass Recife (the easternmost part of Brazil).

However at present Sodebo's course seems to be taking her directly into the centre of where the forecast indicates the high will be, even though the forecast has it shifting marginally to the southeast come Saturday. The good news for Coville is that although the high is in his way come Saturday there appears to be stronger winds generally around its perimeter and this will provide him with more options.
