As all sailors know, finding sponsorship is one of the most difficult parts of the job. But the organisers of the first ever women-only transatlantic race find themselves in the enviable position of having a sponsor approach them, looking for a sailing team to support. The sponsor (who wishes to remain anonymous at this time) is offering €30,000 to help finance a team racing in WOW 2012.
The double-handed race due to set sail from Plymouth for Antigua on 28 October this year and the WOW organisers have been asked to invite teams to apply for the funding by completing the entry form on the WOW website.
The recipients of the sponsorship will be chosen, based not only on their sailing ability but also on the quality of their proposal and the strength of their ideas for a green PR campaign. The successful team will be required to raise awareness of environmental issues affecting the oceans of the world.
The sponsor prefers to remain anonymous until the team has been selected.
Race organiser Tony Lawson was amazed by the sponsor’s offer. “I have run a Class 40 Campaign for over five years and having won among other things the Class 40 World Championships, the most support my boys received was a bottle of Vodka and discounted sailing kit. This only goes to show the uniqueness of the event and that interest in women’s sailing is more universal and more likely to generate media coverage than any other sailing event.”
Applications close on 10 April 2012.
