Largest Class 40 gathering in the USA
The 2012 Atlantic Cup presented by 11th Hour Racing will be contested by 14 Class 40s. Teams from the USA, France, Germany and Great Britain will compete in the multi-city event.
The race features the largest fleet of Class 40s ever assembled in the United States. Several accomplished skippers have recently joined the field including Barcelona World Race competitor Ryan Breymaier who will race with German Jorg Reichers aboard Mare, the Franco-Anglo duo Halvard Mabire and Miranda Merron aboard Campagne De France and American Mini Transat sailor Jesse Naimark-Rowse who will race with Stephane Le Diraison Talan-Bureau Veritas.
They join other top Class 40 crew, who will set sail from Charleston, S.C. on Thursday, 11 May at 1800 ET bound for to New York Harbor for the second leg of the competition. This will be followed by a Pro-Am event over 14 - 19 May, before heading back to the open ocean on 19 May at 11 a.m. ET for the final leg up to Newport, R.I. where two days of inshore racing over 26 – 27 May will conclude the event.
The event organisers have announced two beverage sponsors today: Pabst Blue Ribbon and Doublecross Vodka. Pabst Blue Ribbon has joined the international event as its official Beer Sponsor, which includes an onsite presence at the conclusion of each leg of the competition. Doublecross Vodka has also come aboard to support the Newport, R.I. prize giving on 27 May.
“The Atlantic Cup, the premier Class 40 sailing event in the United States, prides itself on its accessibility to competitors and fans alike and we are thrilled that Pabst Blue Ribbon, which signifies providing a quality product to a mass audience, has come aboard as our official beer sponsor,” said Hugh Piggin, Manuka Sports Event Management Founder and Atlantic Cup Race Director.
