After a 16 day delay as the organisers awaited for a weather window window allowing competitors a (relatively) safe passage across the Bay of Biscay and on their way to the first stopover in Lanzarote, so leg one finally started at 09:19 local time (08:19 UTC) this morning.

In the calm following Monday's stormy conditions, the wind at the start was 12 knots but still gusting to 30 occasionally and with a rough sea.

Richard Hewson on RG650.com, Sébastien Picault on Seb Magnen's legendary 1997/1999 double winner Kickers and Benedict Mary on benoitmarie.com made the best starts.

There were two incidents at the start. Stan Maslard's Groupe Sefico returned to port to fix a technical problem (ironic - she is the only new Proto in the fleet). There was also a collision between Naked Retreats of South African entry Craig Horsfield and Annabelle Boudinot's Proto AGRO650.org. Both boats were forced to return to port to effect repairs. Neither skipper has announced yet whether they will be able to continue.
