How to blog via The Daily Sail

Instructions for this new feature of The Daily Sail

Tuesday June 29th 2010, Author: James Boyd, Location: none selected

A new feature of The Daily Sail is that subscribers can publish their own blogs on the site. The advantage of doing this on our site (as opposed to Facebook) is that there is the potential for it to be viewed by a wider audience - yes, people who might not know you! In addition, subscribers can also set up effectively their own webpage on The Daily Sail. Blogs appear on your own page, on our 'Blogs' page as well as alongside articles throughout the site.

Instructions on how to publish a blog and set up your own page follow below. You can do either without doing the other, but the most powerful combination is if you set up both. Once you are familiar with the procedure for publishing blogs, their posting takes less than 30 seconds.

Details on how to set up your own webpage we’ll deal with separately.

How to blog via The Daily Sail:

i) Log in by typing your username and password into the box in the top RH corner. Then click ‘GO’
ii) Once logged in (your username will appear in the top of the box in the RH corner), go back to the box in the top RH corner and click on ‘Create blog post’
iii) You’ll then be presented with a page called ‘Submit Blog post’
iv) Title – Your name followed by a – or a : (eg: James Boyd:) then the title. Make sure the whole thing is no longer than 50 characters
v) Primary term – chose whether the blog is relevant to offshore/inshore/dinghy.
vi) Club/organisation – if this is relevant, choose from the drop down list
vii) Event – if your blog relates to an event, see if the event features in the drop down list
viii) Craft type – similar to vi) and vii)

ix) Blog body text. Copy and paste text in using by clicking on the icon (1). This deletes any formatting. There are tools to create bold/italics/underlined (2), justifying text (3) and links to other webpages (4)
x) Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click ‘Submit’.
xi) You should then see the finished blog as others will. If you’re unhappy with it – click on the edit tab at the top and you can go back in and make changes. Remember to scroll down to click ‘Submit’ at the end when you’ve finished making changes.

Adding photos to your blog

Adding photos can be done with varying degrees of complexity and in the blog publishing process takes place between steps ix) and x) above.

Basic
- First resize your images so they are 470 pixels across.
- Back on the blog page click on icon 5. You will be presented with an ‘Image Properties’ pop up box. 2cm down on the RH side there is a ‘browse server’ button – click on this.
- Another pop up box called ‘image/file browser’ will appear. Half way down on the LH side there is a button called ‘choose file’. Click this and then choose the image you want to upload from your hard drive. Then click ‘upload file’.
- Once the file has uploaded it will appear in the list at the top of the page and if you click on the file listing the ‘image/file browser’ disappears, automatically inserting the link to your image in the ‘image properties’ box.
- Click ‘ok’ and your image miraculously appears in the blog.
- Repeat these steps to insert additional photos.

Advanced
- Edit your images so they come in two sizes - 470 pixels across and 800 pixels across. Save them with the same file name, but ending in _470 and _800 respectively.
Click this and then choose the 470-wide image you want to upload from your hard drive. Then click ‘upload file’. Do the same for the 800
- Once the files have uploaded they will appear in the list at the top of the page. Click on the _470 file listing, the ‘image/file browser’ disappears, automatically inserting the link to your image in the ‘image properties’ box.
- In the ‘image properties box’, copy the URL of the image, click on the ‘Link’ tab and paste the URL into the empty URL box. Replace the ‘_470’ part of the URL with ‘_800’
- Click ‘ok’ and your image miraculously appears in the blog, only now when someone clicks on it on the live blog, it will display the larger 800 wide photo.
- Repeat these steps to insert additional photos.

Troubleshooting
- Don’t put photos in at the top of the blog
- If you insert multiple photos in, you may find that the top one doesn’t appear. If this happens simply go back into the blog editor (via the little ‘edit’ tab at the top of the blog), click on the top photo in the blog, copy it and then paste it in after the first paragraph of the blog copy.
