Calvi Network blazes away
For the first European Championship of the new J/70 one design, organised by Fraglia Vela Riva, 33 crews are taking part from eight nations.
The opening day of the regatta saw three races held in a southerly wind starting at 8-12 knots. These conditions gave the crews time to acclimatise to the course and to gain confidencein their yachts.
After two races the Ora picked up to 16 knots before dropping for the finish of the third and final race.
Coming out ahead of the Brits and Slovenians are the Italians in particular, Carlo Alberini on Calvi Network. Alberini who is owner driver was in no way intimidated when faced for the first time by such a large fleet of J/70s. In fact he posted a 1-2-2 to end the day holding a 12 point lead over Baby J. Baby J finished 11th in the first race, won the second and was fifth in the third, ultimately ending up in second place overall but tied on points with the Italian Sasha Grey Sailing team of Mario Beraha with 3-6-8.
Team Ceeref of Slovenia are currently in fourth place. This team is the past World Champion in the highly competitive RC44 class and once again skipper Igor Lah is assisted by his tactician Michele Ivaldi. They got off to a good start to the regatta with a 2-9-7 leaving them within one point of the top three.
