Lay Day in Kenya
Monday February 24th 2003, Author: Chips Howarth, Location: United Kingdom
Day 2 dawned hot and sunny (as usual) with a lighter 8-12 knot wind. The fleet seem to be getting more jittery, with a number of general recalls in both races (race 3 & 4 of the Championship).
We managed to make a clean start in race three and following a good first beat, led at the windard mark. We managed to maintain this from Paul Cullen to gain our third win of the series. Our regatta nose dived from here!!
In race 4, on a black flag start, we gained a very safe transit that we were below at start time. We were amazed to find our number on the chalk board following the subsequent general recall. Many people at the pin end felt the same thing as numbers were being taken by a moving RIB.
A protest has been lodged, to be heard Tuesday morning.
On top of this, the Mombassa Express (the local term for 'the shits!!') hit hard last night and a number of people (as well as myself) haven't ventured far from the safety of a loo seat on the lay day today!!
We have managed to fit a half day's deep sea fishing in today where Angus Hemmings landed a 60lb Sailfish.
Big day tomorrow, early protest followed by two more races. I think the series will start to take shape by Tuesday evening.
