VIDEO: Cogito's wing
Friday September 24th 2004, Author: James Boyd, Location: United States
Cogito, the Little America's Cup winner in 1996 is still by far the dominant boat at the present International C-Class Catamaran Championship, nearing its conclusion in Bristol, Rhode Island.
In this unique collection of video footage, Cogito's owner and crew, Steve Clark, explains how the exceptional wing on his boat works. To read more about Cogito's wing click here. It should be remembered that this wing is the product of six previous Little America's Cup campaigns (all the Patient Lady series of cats) and was put together with all the attention of a big America's Cup development program.
Clip 1 - Steve describes what the mainsheet does and shows how they can put up to 40 or so degrees of camber into their wing.

Clip 2 - Steve demonstrates the role of the middle element, the flap connected to the back of the wing's front element and how it automatically sets up the wing's slot and is restricted relative to the amount of camber

Clip 3 - A long one this (apologies). Steve shows how they can induce twist in Cogito's rig. Cogito was the first wing where they could induce twist in the front element, which Steve explains they wanted but didn't know how to do it, until they were shown the way by an inventive International Canoe sailor. What is not clear in the video is that there is spar that runs up the inside of the front element that remains static as twist is induced into the bottom of the front element's outer casing.

Firstly due to the file sizes involved, this is deliberately aimed at those readers with broadband access or considerable patience. Video we publish can be watched on PCs in Windows Media Player (.wmv file format) or on Macs using Quicktime (.mov file format). Quicktime movies can also be watched on a PC if Quicktime is installed (it can be downloaded here). Both programs thankfully allow the video to be viewed as it is downloaded. We apologise to users who find this video too big/small but this technology is still in its infancy and we are awaiting better solutions. Any suggestions? Please click here. |
