Lining up for the JJ

28 18ft skiffs due to take part in this year's unofficial world championshipon Sydney Harbour

A fleet of 28 skiffs from six countries will contest the Ssangyong JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship which begins with an invitation race on Sydney Harbour this coming Friday.

Defending champion Rob Greenhalgh and the RMW Marine team will start as favourites to retain their crown although strong challenges will come from past champions such as Howie Hamlin ( West Marine) from the USA and locals Michael Coxon ( Casio Seapathfinder) and Daniel Phillips ( Omega Smeg).

Along with the prestige of winning the world's most respected 18ft Skiff title, competitors will be sailing for the first prize of a Ssangyong Musso Sports vehicle. This will be the richest prize offered for the event since its inception in 1938.

The championship's first heat will be sailed on Saturday, 19 February with a total of seven heats being sailed to conclude on Sunday, 27 February.

Heat 1 - Saturday, 19 February
Heat 2 - Sunday, 20 February
Heat 3 - Tuesday, 22 February
Heat 4 - Wednesday, 23 February
Heat 5 - Thursday, 24 February
Heat 6 - Saturday, 26 February
Heat 7 - Sunday, 27 February
