West Kirby Sailing Club played host to the 2006 Twiname Youth Team Racing Championship which kicked off on the 28-29 October, drawing fourteen teams together to take part in a full weekend of competitive team racing.
Most teams arrived early to use the Friday afternoon to familiarize themselves with the Firefly dinghies, made available by the club. Racing got underway early on Saturday morning and with building breezes sailors showed off their boat handling skills. The first day of racing saw eleven rounds successfully completed before the winds dropped off in the early evening, leaving the round robin, semi-final and final rounds to be completed the following day.
Sunday saw an early start and a continuation of Saturday’s round robin, with the Grafham Gremlins, leading by one win over Team Itchenor, the reigning champions and West Kirby, both tied on 15 wins a piece.
When the wind died off making the final round impossible to sail, the Grafham Gremlins, made up of Ben Saxton and Matt Rainback, Tim Saxton and Imogen Stanley, and Claire Lasko and Kate Macgregor, took the championship title.
The upcoming Twiname Junior Team Racing Championships will be held on 4-5 November at Spinnaker Sailing Club, New Forrest
