Yandoo takes the lead
Ssangyong Yandoo defeated Micah Lane’s Macquarie Real Estate by 24 seconds with Fiat ( Michael Coxon) a further 42 seconds back in third place. Gotta Love It 7 (Seve Jarvin) was fourth, ahead of Asko Appliances (Hugh Stodart) and Rag & Famish (John Harris).
Ssangyong Yandoo has 12 points from her win, two seconds and a seventh to lead Gotta Love It 7 by just one point. Fiat holds third spot on 17, then comes Rag & Famish on 27, Macquarie Real Estate on 32 and Club Marine on 38.
Macquarie Real Estate’s position will improve when her team discards their race one non-finish (25 points) after a gear breakage let them down prior to the start.
A brilliant 20-knot summer north east wind prevailed for the race which was sailed as part of the Australia Day Regatta on Sydney Harbour. Macquarie Real Estate continued their great form from the previous two races to lead the fleet at the windward mark from a group, which included Gotta Love It 7, Asko, Ssangyong Yandoo, Fiat and appliancesonline.com.au.
The young crew maintained a good lead downwind while the vastly more experienced Ssangyong Yandoo team led the challengers as the fleet headed back to the windward mark. Midway through the race Macquarie Real Estate and Ssangyong Yandoo broke away from the bunch and were engaged in their own private match race. The pair sailed gybe-for-gybe down the second spinnaker run with the Ssangyong Yandoo team continually applying the pressure to Micah and his boys.
Fiat was third just ahead of defending champion Asko Appliances, previous series leader Gotta Love It 7, appliancesonline.com.au and Fisher & Paykel. Ssangyong Yandoo led narrowly as the two leaders turned the leeward mark and held on over the concluding lap of the course for their good victory.
