Opening on 20 April, 2009, the Pro-Vela sailing centre caters for everyone from beginners to expert sailors, with a fleet of the most up-to-date and exciting boats to learn on, including the hugely popular Laser SB3 keelboat; Laser, Radial and RS Q’ba dinghies; and the amazing foiling Bladerider Moth - Pro-Vela is the ONLY European sailing holiday company to be a Bladerider-approved training centre.
Experienced sailors can learn to ‘fly’ above the waves in these incredible boats, or develop your own programme of private coaching in the Pro-Vela fleet of dinghies and keelboats. With top-level tuition from former RYA coach, sports scientist and sailing national champion Alan Hillman, everyone can benefit from the very latest professional coaching techniques, including video analysis of your sailing, on-the-water instruction from a RIB, and onshore access to a gym and physiotherapist.
Intermediate sailors can choose to try asymmetric Sportsboat sailing with the Pro-Vela fleet of SB3s, one of the most popular and competitive classes around. For beginners there is a range of introductory courses, learning to sail either in a stable keelboat or the beginner-friendly RS Q’ba dinghies.
The Mar Menor in the south-east of Spain is the perfect sailing venue for all levels - a huge inland lagoon of over 170 square kilometres, it boasts 325 days of sun a year and reliable thermal winds which create year-round sailing conditions. With a gently shelving sandy beach and safety cover on hand, learner sailors can build their confidence, whilst experienced sailors can enjoy a phenomenal sailing area. The Pro-Vela sailing centre is located at the CAR Infanta Cristina, a Spanish High Performance Centre of Excellence (equivalent to the world-famous Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in the UK), in the town of Los Alcazares.
Shirley Robertson, British double Olympic gold medalist, sailed and trained with Alan Hillman at Mar Menor in preparation for her triumphs at the Games. She welcomed the opening of Pro-Vela, saying: ‘It’s fantastic to see such a great new training centre opening in the Mar Menor - the location is ideal and I have great memories of training there during my Olympic build-ups, I know experienced sailors will benefit hugely from Alan’s expertise and newcomers to the sport will get a perfect introduction that should really get them hooked!’
There is a four-star hotel right next door to the sailing centre, as well as a huge range of resorts, apartments and villas nearby, meaning you can choose the accommodation that suits. The Pro-Vela team is on hand to advise on accommodation and flights, with the option of arriving at either Murcia (San Javier) airport just outside Los Alcazares, or Alicante (around one hour away). Non-sailors can enjoy the Mar Menor’s endless sandy beaches, the area’s many golf courses or luxurious spas, and other activities in the region such as diving, horse-riding or cycling.
