Skiff Pro Tour moves on
Following Grand Prix in Sicily, Travemunde and most recently on Lake Garda, the 2002 Skiff Pro Tour enters its final round with the Lagos Grand Prix on the Algarve, Portugal on 12-15 September.
15 18ft skiff teams will be taking part in the Lagos Grand Prix, an event that is being run by the International Skiff Sailing Club and the Clube de Vela de Lagos. Courses will as usual by right by the shore line so that spectators are very close to the event and can watch every single manoeuvre in close up. Perfect wind conditions coming in from the Atlantic Ocean will guarantee exciting races for sailors and a spectacle for visitors. All races have live commentry and shoreside there are many features to promote a party atmosphere.
The elite among Skiff sailors are due to take part. Top teams are expected from Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, England, Austria, Germany and Portugal. With more demanding wind and wave conditions anticipated than have so far materialised on the circuit, some exciting racing is to be expected.
Once again the fight for first is like to be a duel between the two leading teams - Mettler Toledo from Denmark and the Swiss on board Model. With Michael Hestbek and Tom Rüegge both are sailed by Olympians. Currently Mettler Toledo is ahead of Model with a ten point lead. "Everything is still open and we can expect more exciting competitions!" said Michael Hestbek after the races in Campione (Lake Garda). But Team Model won't give up and starts in Lagos with very high expectations.
There is also a fight on for third position, with a number of teams very close, but in particular the two Danish teams Wempe and Quantum who have been sailing consistently and achieved top rankings.
