The Olympic 49er is known as a spectacular and dramatic boat, as demonstrated at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing when Danes, Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp, succeeded in winning the Olympic gold medal after a number of nerve-racking races and a legal sequel that all sailing fans well remember. Hosting the 2013 49er European Championship has just been awarded to Sailing Aarhus in Denmark, together with the 29er World Championship and 29erXX World Cup.
Olympic Gold Medallist, Jonas Warrer believes in homeground advantage: ”It is really fantastic to see all the great international events that Sailing Aarhus has been able to attract to the Bay of Aarhus”, says Jonas Warrer, who is the defending 49er Olympic Gold Medallist and continues: “I look forward to competing on homeground and to enjoy the indisputable advantage it gives me when competing at the Europeans”.
Vice Mayor Marc Perera Christensen is pleased: ”I am very much looking forward to attending this great event, especially now that one of our Olympic top class sailors is part of it, and also I am pleased that it is staged in our beautiful City of Århus. The Danish population has many good memories from the exciting races in the 49er class at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing” says Alderman for Culture and citizen service centre Marc Perera Christensen “and I have learned that we have a great deal of young talents in the 29er class so I look forward to follow their efforts in the world championships.
”It is our goal to constantly attract international sailing events to Denmark, especially in the Olympic classes, of which we had four in 2009 alone: the Finn Gold Cup Class Championships, the 470 World Championships, the European Laser Radial Championships and the European Match Race Championships for women. By appointing Denmark as the host nation for the 2013 49er European Championships and the 29er World Championship we are likely to win the hosting of even more major championships in Danish waters” says Chief Executive Lars Lundov of Sport Event Denmark.
The Port of Århus will be the event venue for the 2013 49er European Championships as well as the 29er World Championships and 29erXX World Cup. Sailing Aarhus, which is a non-profit event organisation formed by 5 sailing clubs in Århus, is supported by the Danish Sailing Association, Sport Event Denmark and the City of Århus. In 2010, Sailing Aarhus hosted the 505 World Championships and the European Dinghy Championships. In 2011 the city is staging the World A-Class Catamaran Championships and the X-35 World Championships. Ultimately, the goal is to bid for and stage the ISAF Worlds 2014, which is a unique World Championship event for all Olympic classes.
