For the budding Bens of the cyber world
The Sail for Gold Game has been re-launched for 2013 and is now available on all iOS and Android devices as a free download.
Could you be the Ben Ainslie of the cyber world, think you have the competitive drive to race and win like the World’s most successful Olympic sailor? Or windsurf your way round a championship course like 2013 RS: X World Champion Nick Dempsey?
The Sail for Gold Game driven by Volvo, gives players an understanding of how Sir Ben Ainslie and the country’s top sailing medallists battle for podium glory from the comfort of their living room “The Sail for Gold Game is great fun, you get to experience the challenges we face on the race course as you battle it out to win gold. It’s free to play and pretty addictive, it will definitely bring out your competitive side," commented Sir Ben Ainslie, CBE.
The game, aimed at both sailors and non-sailors alike, is free to play online and download on both iOS and Android and was first launched in partnership with the RYA in 2012 as part of a campaign to demystify the complex world of sailing and give players the option to race virtually as their sailing heroes. It has since been developed to focus more on the sport and less on the personalities giving players the option to race as and against all the Olympic and Paralympic classes including the Finn, RS:X, Laser, 2.4mR and the Sonar. The two newest classes, the Nacra 17 and Women’s 49er FX Skiff have also been introduced to the game.
“The Sail for Gold Game aims to raise the profile of the country’s top sailing talent while helping players gain an understanding of world-class sailing in a fun and interactive way. We hope the updated game will continue to appeal to both a sailing and non-sailing audience and encourage new people to get involved in the sport, virtually and in reality,” said Nikki Rooke, Head of Corporate Communications, Events and Sponsorship for Volvo Car UK.
Players are challenged to master the art of sailing using touchscreen gestures to gybe, tack and sail around a championship course, in the fastest time whilst facing the challenge of collecting all the bonus stars to increase their scores. Once all 11 classes have been completed players can leave their score on the ‘word ranking’ leaderboard.
The updated Sail for Gold Game is available now as a free download on the iTunes App Store and on Google Play. Also available to play online at www.sailforgoldgame.com
